About Kitty Fischer

New Book Focuses On Kitty Fischer Kitty Fischer, born to a Cajun family in rural Lousiana, first left home for education at the Louisiana School for the Deaf, then left her people altogether for the promise of a better life at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Graduated, working as a librarian at her alma mater, married and raising a son, Fischer had little reason and little time to contemplate the people and places she had left behind. Her discovery that she had Usher syndrome, a genetic condition that causes both deafness and blindness, however, proved to be an unlikely catalyst toward revisiting her cultural roots, a powerful story movingly told by authors Cathryn Carroll and Catherine "Kitty" Hoffpauir: "Fischer in Orchid of the Bayou: A Deaf Woman Faces Blindness". In coming to terms with Usher syndrome, Fischer learned of the high incidence of the condition among Cajun people; suddenly, what seemed like disparate parts of her life began to come together. "Now, as an adult, I undertook to learn about the heritage that was my birthright and slowly managed to overcome some of the ignorance that occurs when one is cut off from one's hearing family by being deaf." Orchid of the Bayou is a story not only of personal triumph but also of the multiple cultural traditions - Deaf, Blind, and Cajun - that comprise one woman's genuinely postmodern identity.

In Honor of Our Librarian Kitty Fischer

Kitty, you are not....unforgotten! :)

FYI, I wrote some of my posts at a local library in San Diego. Funny how all things are connected!

Blogging and Journalism

What you are witnessing now is a revolution of the new deaf media. Remember our Revolutionary War? What does the word revolution mean? Can there be a violent revolution or a peaceful revolution?

Halloween Scare = Score 4 for MSSD

1. 21 MSSD Alumni arrested! They spoke their minds! They execrised their right to free speech. That is a history lesson of great importance.

2. MSSD Seniors Class of '07 spoke their minds, too! They should be applauded for speaking out their minds! This is student power. Use it with respect, for it can and will build your future!

3. MSSD student Anthony Jones spoke his mind! The eloquency in his letter is a quality that diplomats share in their language. Efficient and strong communications is the key to success for your future.

4. An anonymous student sent me a letter expressing his dismay at the crisis on Kendall Green. This student is related to someone in the Pentagon. His letter touched my heart very deeply. Let's give big hands for HawkEagle!!! He has spoken his mind for MSSD, for Gallaudet University, for Kendall Green, for ALL, for the WORLD!

(Psst....I was Hawk in the Boy Scouts when I was at MSSD! It was the name of my small team! ;) )

The Block Is Removed!

One thing I loved remembering about MSSD is one of the English classes I took, called Word Play. This is fun. I hope you students are still taking this same Word Play class that I remember back in my good old days. Jane K. Fernandes symbolizes the Block of education on Kendall Green. I am sure the supreme irony of this is not lost on teachers and the principal at MSSD! I would like to apologize to the principal if she ever felt embarassed at all about the publicity on the MSSD gate. It is my sincerest wish to see education continued at MSSD and that all you may sleep well at night. You've given Washington, D.C. a good Halloween scare! Now the nightmare is over.

Who's Smiling Now?

As God is My Witness, Paul Kelly Grinned!

Filed under: Reporting, GU Protest Continues, Op-Ed — Patricia Raswant at 5:02 pm on
Sunday, October 29, 2006

After bulldozing protestors and their tents at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf gate, I was not able to express my dismay-I was in shock since last Wednesday the 25th, not sure what I should say. But today, I know exactly what I must announce to the world.
Upon learning that some staff of the Physical Plant Department used their bulldozer to vamp the protestors and their tents at the MSSD gate and how the Department Public Safety officers once again assaulted the students, I dropped everything and was on my way to Gallaudet University. When I finally arrived, I saw how angry the students were but they mustered courage to control their rage and did not react. The students simply took back “Bison Mountains”-the MSSD gate. I was very proud of them.
Guess who showed up? Paul Kelly!
Guess what he did? He grinned!
Yes, I know you’d be angry! I was not angry at all but thoroughly disgusted by his attitude, so I walked up to him and asked,
PR: “Are you enjoying the entertainment here?”
PK: “Uhm, no, I am not.”
PR: “Really? Why did you grin?”
PK was taken aback and was speechless.
PR: “Why did you allow this to happen?”
PK: “We want to open the gates.”
PR: “You have one gate opened at the Sixth Street.”
PK continued speechless before he finally spoke up, “I don’t want to talk with you anymore.”
PR: “Of course, you don’t! Thank you!” I turned around and walked away from him. At that point, several people circled him signing furiously to him.
Because of my very first time atrocious encounter with Paul Kelly, I am past the point of a potential mediation between the administration and GUFSSA. Out IKJ, JKF, and PK must go!

BoT Terminates Jane Fernandes!!!

BoT Terminates Jane Fernandes!!!

TO: Campus Community
FROM: Board of Trustees
DATE: October 29, 2006

RE: Board of Trustees MeetingToday, we announce with much regret and pain that after serious deliberation in a special, all-day Executive Session of the Board of Trustees, we have voted to terminate Dr. Fernandes’ appointment as President-Designate (currently effective) and President (effective beginning January 1, 2007) at Gallaudet University. We understand the impact of this decision and the important issues that inherently arise when a Board re-examines decisions in the face of an on-going protest. The Board believes that it is in the best interests of the University to terminate Dr. Fernandes from the incoming President’s position. Although undoubtedly there will be some members of the community who have differing views on the meaning of this decision, we believe that it is a necessity at this point. The Board is continuing to meet to discuss transitional issues. It has certainly been a difficult and trying time for our Gallaudet community. Now is the time for healing. The hope of the Board of Trustees is for our beloved community to come together to work for a stronger and better Gallaudet.

Breaking News!

GREAT NEWS, all MSSD students!

The Board of Trustees has terminated President-designate Jane K. Fernandes! This is a time for a celebration of victory!

To the MSSD Class of '07, you have shown the Eagles spirit. You are heroes. Let the Brentwood gate be a symbol of your little heroic acts for your big brothers and sisters at Gallaudet University.

We MSSD alumnus thank you for speaking open your minds! I think Washington, D.C. has....

HEARD you!

Eagles Number One!!!

Letter from Anthony Jones

This is Anthony Jones speaking. In my heart, I am loyal to MSSD. I understood the issues what is going on from DPN 1988 to now. First of all, speaking about wake up call and it is our future. I want to tell you that I have a hunch that that decison made for JKF to be president of Gallaudet was two steps ahead of us. We need to do better. It is not the speed of the body who get the position, it is the speed of the message that can function in the position. In other words, American is not ready Deaf Chrisopher Columbos, it is CC who found the land and in our society say "get in line." However, we are going through disillusion. In other words, too tiny and small to that overlooked unintentionally.

I give you an example, Sherri Collins who is a big lady for the Arizona Commssioner for the Deaf and Hard of hearing. She went through a lot of difficulty to get a bill to pass because attorneys wanted to interpret the law. "It may take your life time to pass a bill you desire."

I am going to be bluntly with the deaf population. "Do what you can do for your country, don't ask your country what they can do for you---JFK. Find a state move to one state and grow the population there and set up a private/Public univertsity for the deaf and hard of hearing like Clerc University. Then, you got your governor and senator who will "voice" for one as a whole. It may not be realistic, but tell you what Ali believes...." Impossible is Nothing.

DO Not give up the protest. Get demands, fundraising, and plan for the next President or i mentioned. Do not wait till the last minute. We are 9 to 1 on earth. Gotta work harder like I worked hard playing basketball because I want to play in the NBA, but I faced barriers as well as deaf students wanted a deaf president.

Build an organization for the future president like the NCAAP or NAD, but NAD focus on general. Or, get NAD to build another organization that can print newspapers, sign out program on fox or cbs. This will educate the community about our incentive.

For JKF supporters, I can say "Lucky." BE NICE TO The DEAF Community, please. I know how adamant this can be, but you learned from....DPN 1988.

Letter from MSSD Seniors

Filed under: General, FSSA, - Clerc Center — gufssa @ 10:51 am

To the Members of the G.U. Board of Trustees, This morning on October 25, 2006, the seniors of the Model Secondary School for the Deaf were on our way to our internship sites. Unfortunately, we witnessed an unexpected confrontation between the Campus police and Gallaudet students who were protesting at the Brentwood gate near the Model Secondary School for the Deaf. We, the seniors, have never witnessed anything like this since the beginning of the protest. Having seen this occurred, we felt traumatized by this experience. We realized how much hatred and violence were created by the Department of Public Safety who was ordered to destroy this protest which was supposed to be a peaceful one. We felt that the Department of Public Safety didn’t confront this situation peacefully. They were being very physical and ignored the students when they were trying to communicate with them. This protest is becoming more serious than we expected. So, for the seniors who witnessed this confrontation, we decided to wake up and show our support. We walked out of our school to show that we are physically there so the community of Gallaudet University would become very aware that we want to support this protest in every way possible. This protest has been going on since May 2006 and we believe it is time for all of you, the Board of Trustees, to get more involved with the Gallaudet community and hear us out. We won’t give up fighting for our rights. Our future is in your hands. Wake up.
